Dr. Joseph Mukasa holds a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Makerere University Kampala Uganda, a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and the Bachelor Degree of Development Studies (First Class Honours) from Makerere University Kampala. Joseph has attended several short courses that have awarded him Diplomas: Mass Mobilisation and Democratisation; Gender, Peace and Conflict; and Conflict Trends by Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), and Certificates: Conflict and Peace in the Great Lakes Region of Africa (Department of Development Studies, Makerere University); Peace Agreement Implementation: Challenges and Opportunities (Universidad de los Andes, in Bogotá – Colombia); Human Rights Methodology and Approaches (The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Oslo).
Joseph was a Gerda-Henkel Stiftung Fellow (2023-2025) while at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University; a Visiting Fellow of Erasmus + Exchange Programme at the University of Siegen, Germany; and Visiting Fellow on the NORHED II Research Mobility, NORHED II Project at Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). He has attended international conferences: Archiving, Memory and Method from the Global South (AMM2024) held at Makerere University; The 7th Mashariki Literary and Cultural Studies Conference: Ecocritical Textualities and Eastern African Literary and Cultural Practices held at College of Humanities, University of Dar es Salaam; and the 11th International Decoloniality Summer School on Fanon beyond Fanon: Living Decoloniality-Language, Identity and Aesthetics, held at the College of Human Sciences, UNISA Main Campus, South Africa; and Epistemological Issues in International Development in International Development held by School of Global Development University of East Anglia, Norwich.
Joseph has taught at Makerere University in the Department of Development Studies (2013-2015, 2019-2024) and Ndejje University (2019-2021). In terms of Research, Joseph has participated in a study on Cross-Border Conflict, Peace and Security in Northern Uganda, West Nile and Karamoja funded by Makerere University Research Innovation Fund (RIF). He also worked as a Project Administrator for Capacitating Local Councils for ‘Secure’ Land Transfers in Kisenyi Informal Settlement, Kampala City (CLASK) project funded by The African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC), and Uganda Research Coordinator for Strengthening Knowledge Evidence Use and Leadership in Forced Displacement with focus on East Africa project funded by the University of Dar es Salaam (IDRC). Joseph’s research interests are in Rural livelihoods; Land conflicts; Resistance to Land dispossessions/grabbing; Cross-Border Conflicts, Insecurity and Peace; Human Development and Green Economy. He approaches development Challenges through an inter-disciplinary perspective, political economy, feminist political economy and political ecology. He does the analysis through a critical theory lens.
