Profile
Dr Alex Ssebaana holds a Doctor of Philosophy and the Master of Arts in History both from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda. He is a qualified teacher. He holds Bachelor Degree of Arts Education (History/Economics) from Gulu University, Uganda. He was a Gerda-Henkel Stiftung PhD Fellow at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University (2023-2025) and the Erasmus Plus Mobility Fellow (2024-2025) at the University of Turin, Italy. He has attended Summer Schools including; Africa Summer School of 2025 at the University of Turin and the 11th International Decoloniality Summer School on Fanon beyond Fanon: Living Decoloniality-Language, Identity and Aesthetics held at the College of Human Sciences at the University of South Africa Main Campus.
He has participated in a number of conferences: The 7th Mashariki Literary and Cultural Studies Conference; Ecocritical Textualities and Eastern African Literary and Cultural Practices held at College of Humanities, University of Dar es Salaam, the International Conference on Renewing Economic History in East Africa hosted by the Department of History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Makerere University, and International Conference on Archiving, Memory and Method from the Global South (AMM2024).
Alex has published on the state of workers welfare within the Kenya Uganda Railway and East Africa Railway and Harbours in Busoga-Uganda, Railways as sites of identity formation and creation: gender, race, and labour hierarchies in Jinja. In addition, He has seven years of teaching and supervision experience with Gulu University- History Department (2018-2025). Alex’s research interests are in the Lived experiences of former Kenya Uganda Railways (KUR) and East African Railways and Harbours (EARH) workers, the intersection of Nationality, identity and power, Family life and Gender roles in workforce communities, Workers Welfare Labour Mobilities; processes and consequences. He is a qualitative researcher who leans more on modernisation, dependency and critical race theorists to analyse his findings and present his thought through writings.
